Eksjö and the Old Town have been awarded the internationally recognised Europa Nostra Diploma 1997. This prestigious honour is a reward for good architectural and cultural preservation.
In the citation it says that the Old Town in Eksjö receives the award "for the remarkable renovation of this important ensemble of traditional wooden buildnings which has given new life to the old town centre"
It is not by chance that Eksjö´s unique town plan and architecture is in the European spotlight. Europa Nostra – Our Europe – is a totally European institution. It is made up of 200 organisations in 30 different countries. Europa Nostra has a very strong position as a leading advice giving institution for both the European Council and the European Union.
Europa Nostra's main task is to protect and preserve European heritage as far as buildings and the environment are concerned. The organisation promotes a high standard of town planning and architecture. This is done through the giving of awards and also through resolutions, conferences, publications, scientific research, various awards, support etc.
In 2003, Eksjö celebrated the 600th anniversary of its original charter. Tourists and other visitors see Eksjö as an exciting place to visit which has now come even more into focus as a result of international interest.
